Top Gun Tower, MCAS, Miramar
Client: US Navy

Casper Company spearheaded the effort to remove and preserve the Top Gun Tower made famous by the movie starring Tom Cruise. Crews began by gutting the interior of the structure on which the tower was perched, including removal of asbestos and lead paint. Casper also developed the crane design for lifting the top and lowering it onto a flatbed truck for moving.

Casper workers cut concrete from the inside of the structure and carved through 8-inch-thick primary exterior walls and 24”-supporting beams. A horizontal cut was also made through the tower just before the top was moved to its new location at the museum on base. The remaining 11 feet of the control tower was then cut into five pieces weighing between 18,000 and 23,000 pounds each and hauled offsite.
